By putting in the initial effort to understand and define the targeted focus of your marketing, you will save yourself from doing any redundant work in the future. Below are some tips to help get your marketing efforts organized and save your team some time!
Establish Marketing Pillars
When you create content to engage your readers, it’s best to identify the goals of that content. What do you wish to accomplish with your writing? What information/solutions are your readers searching for? By creating marketing pillars, you can identify the goals of the content you produce. For example, we have broken up our marketing pillars into four categories to target the four most important topics we continually address within our content.
Once you have chosen your pillars, it’s also helpful to create an internal document that outlines the goal of each pillar, and examples of what posts could be included. For example, if you choose Industry Involvement as a marketing pillar, examples could be content written about industry events you have recently attended. Marketing pillars can also be helpful in scheduled and planning out content, so don’t hesitate to add them into your content calendar!
Understanding Your Target Audience
In order to provide solutions and important information to your readers, you need to identify your target audience. Consider taking into account the demographics and buying patterns of your audience/customers/clients, as well as their motivations for seeking out a business like yours. Once you are able to identify what solution you provide your audience, you can develop your content with that goal in mind.
It’s also important to make sure you are pushing out that brilliant content on platforms where your target audience will see and share that information. Once again, preliminary research will save you in the long run, so take the time to get organized before you start cranking out your content.
Research Topics and Keywords
You know your company better than anyone, which is why it’s important to research how your audience is finding your business. You’re an expert in your field, so you already know what keywords your target audience is searching for. The average consumer is (most likely) less well-versed in your industry, and may be using different keywords than you would expect.
Consider the solution you provide to your clients and ask yourself the following:
- How would do they search for that solution online?
- They probably don’t know industry lingo, so how else are they going to find you?
- How do consumers typically search for your service or product offering online?
