When initially meeting with clients about SEO, one of the first things we remind them is that it truly is a long game. So many of the basic principles of SEO, such as building engaging content that other sites link to, can take months to achieve. But the light at the end of the tunnel reminds us that all of the efforts can be more than worth it.

While SEO is a long-term strategy, there are some quick wins you can implement to help improve your rankings!

Reclaiming Links

Websites change over time. Products come and go, information is updated, and URLs are often modified. While a lot of this sounds like on-page SEO, it affects off-page SEO as well, mainly links.

If you have secured hard-earned links and updated URLs, subfolders, or even changed the information on the page, you have affected that link and most likely lost it. Oftentimes page migration involves a 301 redirect, so visitors are prompted to a new, relevant page. This passes link equity as well, although some is unfortunately lost. However, if there is no redirect set in place, and there are inbound links pointing to the old URL, you have ultimately lost easylink equity. Using tools like MajesticSEO will provide a list of pages from a client’s website that have one or multiple incoming links. From there, we recommend using Screaming Frog to see which of those pages (with inbound links) are generating a 404 error. Setting 301-redirects to the most relevant working pages is a fast and easy way to reclaim lost link juice!

Unlinked Brand Mentions

An unlinked mention is exactly what it sounds like: an instance when a blog or website mentions your client’s brand without providing a link back to their website. It is also one of the easiest SEO wins and getting the source to link to the website should not be too challenging!

By running a simple Google search of your client’s company or brand, the search results should populate a variety of links to where else on the web your client is mentioned. If you see the brand is mentioned elsewhere (preferably on quality, high-authority sites) without a link directing to the site, there is a great opportunity lost for a quality backlink. The good news is that most mentions will be positive and by simply reaching out to the contact whoever runs the website, they will throw you a bone and provide you with a backlink. Within the email, all you really need to emphasize is that their readers would gain more value by having the opportunity to visit the website for more information. A win-win for both parties.

Boosting Your Page 2 Rankings

When your client’s website has pages ranking at the top of page two for high volume keyword phrases, they are this close to a flow of new traffic. It is as simple as identifying these almost-there pages, pinpointing the most authoritative pages, then building internal links to help push them onto page one.

An important part of boosting rankings is managing link equity across your client’s website. Websites will naturally have some pages that have higher authority and others that are lower. Fortunately, through strategic internal linking, you can help distribute this authority throughout the website. The strategy is to identify the page two ranking pages and keywords and build internal links to these pages using these keywords in the anchor text. Internal links are simply links from pages within your site to other pages on your site to help spread the link juice and anchor text is the text used within the link.

These are just a few simple tactics that can lead to quick SEO wins for any new client. Most are relatively simple, but can often be overlooked if you do not look at the big picture of your next SEO campaign.
