Two New(ish) Skills a Digital Marketer Needs to Succeed

Ah, the ever-evolving world of digital marketing. It’s hard to keep up, isn’t it? A good three or four years ago, the skills mentioned below were a huge value add, but not crucial to a digital marketing position. Now, if you want to be at the top of your game, these skills are the ones you’ll need to propel you forward.

Be Well-Versed in the World of Digital Advertising

While this isn’t a ‘new’ skill, it’s become one that many, if not most, employers require of their digital marketing hires. It’s valuable to understand advertising options on social media because all the major social landscapes (including Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram) now offer highly targeted advertising. Understanding how to implement successful retargeting and AdWords campaigns, too, is not just essential for SEOs, but it should be at least understood by any digital marketing pro.

To develop this skill, create a test account on the major social platforms for the sole purpose of testing out advertising options. We do this with Facebook to test new advertising options via our ‘test’ account page prior to implementing new ads for clients. Track which ads work well and which don’t in an Excel doc. Do the same with AdWords campaigns. Read articles on advertising from sites like Social Media Examiner and Search Engine Land.

Be Comfortable on Camera

Social media is even more of a fishbowl than it was at its inception. Now, with tools like Periscope, Meerkat and SnapChat, digital marketers can communicate with their audience via livestreaming. You’ll find that many solopreneurs, brands and agencies alike are using video capabilities to increase the reach of their brand’s/client’s message. This means that being comfortable in front of a camera has become even more essential. Additionally, if you want to further develop your personal brand or the brand for which you work, finding speaking opportunities at which to present can help you gain more exposure. But, again, you need to be not only comfortable, but confident, speaking in front of an audience. Lastly, if you’re involved in selling your digital marketing service (if you’re part of a small agency team, for example), it’s essential to be able to speak about it well. Better yet, have a presentation in place.

To develop this skill, consider joining your local Toastmasters. Learn to build presentations using tools like Visme and Canva. And remember, practice truly does make perfect.
